Uttar Pradesh Government’s Ambitious Plan: Positioning the State as the Ultimate Global Cultural Destination

The state government of Uttar Pradesh is gearing up to promote the state as the “best cultural destination in the world.” To achieve this goal, the government is working on formulating a comprehensive policy that focuses on the conservation of heritage sites, excavations, and the preservation and showcasing of the state’s rich cultural heritage. The policy also aims to encourage investment in the tourism sector and generate employment opportunities.

The Policy

According to Mukesh Meshram, the Principal Secretary of Culture, the primary objective of this policy is to uphold the unique cultural identity of Uttar Pradesh, nurture and popularize its diverse culture, showcase it to the world in the best possible manner, and create large-scale employment opportunities through cultural initiatives. This policy will be the 26th under the current BJP government, emphasizing its commitment to promoting investment in the state.

Key Features

One of the key aspects of the policy is the promotion of theater and other forms of visual and fine arts. The government recognizes the significance of conserving endangered and threatened art forms, particularly tribal and folk art. Additionally, the ancient Guru Shishya tradition, as well as the art and culture of various regions including Awadh, Braj, Bundelkhand, Paschimanchal, and Purvanchal, will receive special attention and support.

To ensure the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage, the government plans to establish cultural centers at the district, block, and panchayat levels. These centers will play a vital role in safeguarding the fundamental elements of Buddhism, Jainism, Sufism, Bhakti, Shakti, Nath, and Kabir Panths. By establishing these centers, the government aims to create awareness and provide platforms for cultural exchange and engagement at the grassroots level.

The policy places significant emphasis on encouraging investment in the tourism sector. Uttar Pradesh, with its rich historical and cultural heritage, has immense potential to attract domestic and international tourists. By promoting the state as the best cultural destination in the world, the government aims to boost tourism and create opportunities for employment and economic growth. This initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of promoting Uttar Pradesh as a thriving tourist hub.
